ISLAMABAD: The European Union and its member states organised the EuroVillage festival at the Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA) after a three-year hiatus. The event, which in past iterations had attracted thousands of visitors, was equally well attended this year by visitors from all walks of life from the twin cities.

European Union AmbassadorDr Riina Kionka welcomed the visitors, saying, “We cherish the diverse cultures, languages, religions, histories and identities that coexist in Europe. They are part of our wealth, they shape our shared values, connect us and give us a joint sense of purpose. It is this common understanding of shared values and diversity that lies at the heart of our relations with the world – including with Pakistan.”

She said: “This edition of the EuroVillage is special because this year the European Union and Pakistan celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations. This partnership in development, trade and political engagement manifests that we are stronger together. Our partnership has evolved over the decades, as have Pakistan, the European Union and the world. Please do share your stories and photos on social media.”

Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Heritage and Culture Division Engineer Amir Muqam was the chief guest who came from Swat especially to participate in the EuroVillage.

“Let me express my happiness at being here. Truly visiting each stall by the EU states is like being in those countries. I am grateful to all the organisers, volunteers and participants as we commemorate 60 years of partnership with the EU,” he said.

The diplomatic missions of the European Union and member states, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Sweden, had set information and activity booths with interactive games, selfie corners and treats from each country.

The EU motto, ‘Unity in Diversity’ was apparent in both the similarities and the differences amongst stall and activities.

As always, the diplomatic missions were ably supported by associated entities, with the Alliance françaised’ Islamabad cohosting the French embassy stall and KfW next to the Germany embassy stall.

Tetra Pak added to the activities for children by bringing a play swing made entirely from recycled Tetra Pak packaging material. This commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility was lauded by visitors and enjoyed by children.

Swedish Ambassador Henrik Person said: “I am very happy to be visiting this installation made by a Swedish company. Tetra Pak is making sure that the used cartons are recycled to make items for other purposes. This is of course a very fun purpose! I will encourage all consumers to support recycling of cartons as much as possible, Tetra Pak will do the rest to ensure that we are working towards a sustainable future.”

Shanze Ahmed, a 14-year old visiting the event with her family, said: “It was a spectacular experience attending this event. Got to learn about the culture of many different European countries. The stalls they have set up were interactive especially the Austrian one. The music was also a great addition to the event with both European and Pakistani singers.”
