LAHORE: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) is planning to establish its own medical and dental college at an estimated cost of Rs2.5 billion at the Jinnah campus, Kala Shah Kaku.

The university currently has around 50 medical and dental colleges of Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir affiliated with it.

Addressing a meeting of faculty and administrative heads on Tuesday, UHS Vice Chancellor Prof Ahsan Waheed Rathore said the varsity had all the resources to start a medical and dental college of its own in a couple of years. He said the new medical and dental college of the UHS would be made functional by 2024.

“A lecture theatre complex will be constructed in Jinnah campus for this purpose with an auditorium as its part,” he said adding that it would be attached to the hospitals at Muridke, Kala Shah Kaku, and Shahdara as the teaching hospitals. Prof. Ahsan Rathore asked the faculty to start quality undergraduate programmes for financial autonomy. Arrangements regarding medical and dental college admission test (MDCAT) were also reviewed in the meeting.

The VC appointed Registrar Dr. Asad Zaheer as chief courier for the conduct of MDCAT while senior faculty members were nominated as head couriers in different cities. The head couriers will be responsible for conducting MDCAT in their respective cities.
