We’ve been hearing about Jemima Khan’s film What’s Love Got To Do With It? for a couple of years and now the release date is finally approaching. The team released the official trailer to whet our appetites until we can get to theatres and see it for ourselves.

Sajal Aly shared the two-and-a-half-minute long clip on her Instagram account on Wednesday and asked, “How do you find lasting love in today’s world?” Khan posted the trailer too, posing a different question, “Is it better to walk into love, than fall into it?”

The official trailer forms the framework for the film that is about a Pakistani guy (Shahzad Latif) living in the UK who agrees to arranged marriage with a girl back home (Aly). His childhood friend and neighbour (Lily James) is a filmmaker and decides to document the process. In this journey, she questions love and her approach to it, discovering more about herself.

In true rom-com fashion, the trailer hints at funny moments such as James terming the concept of arranged marriage “Stockholm Syndrome” when she asks Latif “What about love?” and he responds, “You grow to love the person you’re with.” One moment that will hit desis in the feels is when the marriage bureau person places Latif on “top of the food chain” when he finds out he’s a doctor. Another is where the family sits a few rows away from the couple on their date at a movie theatre.

A STUDIOCANAL International and Working Title Films production, it is set to release in cinemas on January 27. Written and co-produced by Khan, the movie has been directed by Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. It stars Aly, James, Latif, Shabana Azmi, Asim Chaudhry and Emma Thompson.

The film will be holding its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10.

We all know Sajal behind the scene is promoted by a big Pakistani media house, otherwise she’s not a good actress.

Good to see Pakistani protagonists in a rather normal setting. Should be releasing on Netflix or movie theaters also in Scandinavia.
