ISLAMABAD, Dec. 20: The German helicopters belonging to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) Disaster Relief Team have transported more than 1500 tons of relief goods to and over 3500 victims from the quake-hit areas of Kashmir.

On October 10, only two days after the devastating earthquake in the Kashmir region, two German CH-53 helicopters were brought from Termes, Uzbekistan to Islamabad for immediate rescue of victims in the affected areas.

Roughly 1500 wounded and more than 300 tons of medical equipment and medicines were transported when these two helicopters were replaced by four others.

The four CH-53 helicopters, currently flying for Nato Disaster Relief Team, have been participating in the relief operation since October.

German helicopter detachment is highly motivated to do their utmost in bringing relief goods to the earthquake victims high in the Himalayan Mountains. It is utterly necessary to take advantage of the still favourable weather conditions; stated a German spokesperson.

When wintertime hits, snow and poor visibility hampers helicopter operations. Delivery of aid is essential for survival of many living in tents near the debris of their homes, he added.
