American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift’s rerecorded version of her 2012 song ‘All Too Well’, released in November, was a pop phenomenon. It sparked something in fans and the short film accompanying it was considered a masterpiece that tugged at their hearts, especially since they could connect it with the musician’s love life. It is, therefore, no surprise that the popular short has qualified for an Oscar nomination.

Swift’s described her filmmaking debut as “a film about an effervescent, curious young woman who ends up completely out of her depth”. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it has received an Oscar-qualifying run, making it eligible for the best live action short Oscar, one of the three categories the Oscars have allocated for films timed 40 minutes or under.

The pop star, who has never been nominated for an Oscar before, has stressed that the almost 15-minute film starring Stranger Things star Sadie Sink and Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien, is “not a music video”. Her team is currently working with a top consulting firm to guide its awards campaign.

Written and directed by Swift, the film was also screened in New York for one week last fall, from November 12 (the day of its premiere there) to November 18. The song was also termed the longest no.1 hit in Billboard’s history.

The ‘Shake It Off’ singer is not the only musician in the running for the best live action short Oscar. American rapper Kendrick Lamar’s ‘We Cry Together’ has also made the list. A six-minute film starring himself and Zola’s Taylour Paige as a quarrelling couple, it was released in May and screened at a theatre in Los Angeles from June 3 to June 9, qualifying it for the race.
