KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28: The Malaysian government is considering ways to keep tabs on students who study in countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, a news report said Monday.

This is to prevent students from getting involved in undesirable activities, Bernama news agency said, quoting Education Minister Musa Mohamad.

“For this, we are holding discussions with the Foreign Ministry to work out the suitable procedures before implementing the regulations. For the time being, we are looking at how to ensure that students wishing to go to Pakistan are serious about seeking good knowledge,” Musa said.

“We are also discussing the possibility of requiring these students to obtain certain accreditation before leaving,” he added.

Malaysian police have arrested dozens of men for suspected Islamic militant activities. Some of these men are believed to have undergone training in Afghanistan, while at least one of the suspects studied in Pakistan.—dpa
