LAHORE, Dec 12: A woman relative of the groom whose wedding procession turned into an inferno on Sunday died here of shock on Monday.

The family told reporters that Ms Nusrat, 38, mother of four, suffered a shock when 13 bodies were brought to the groom’s house on Ghazi Road in North Cantonment. She was rushed to hospital where she died before getting any medical aid, they said. She was a first cousin of the groom, Zaheer Khan.

Police said a total of 29 bodies were identified by their relatives. Another three bodies remained unidentified, which were handed over to the area nazim. They said the bodies of at least four people were reduced to ashes, whose remains could not be retrieved.

The police counted the toll of the tragedy at 41, although they believed there might be some more bodies which got reduced to ashes in the blaze.

The dead included eight women, four girls and as many boys, while 16 suffered injuries. The tragic accident took place when fireworks exploded in the bus which was part of a wedding procession.

The groom’s father, Wazeer Khan, however, said the number of people killed in the mishap could be more than 50. “We are still handling bodies. We are busy in calming down our family members,” he said. He was unable to give an exact toll.

“My whole family has been ruined in the tragedy. It is just like doomsday for me. I do not know how would I cop with such a big test in my life.”

Total 13 bodies were brought to the groom’s house, a place where people had been dancing and celebrating just a day before. The coffins were places outside the house, where everybody was gripped by shock and grief.

Six more bodies of a family were taken to Nizamabad in Gujjarpura, while four more of another family were taken to North Cantonment. Three bodies were handed over to families in Sabzazar, Gowalmandi and Chungi Amar Sadhu.
