DISASTER IN WAITING: During my recent visit to Peshawar, I had to pass through the Kohat tunnel. I was shocked to see that the tunnel had no lighting, and it was challenging to drive using the car’s headlights alone. What aggravated the situation was the fact that there were no fans to remove the dust gathered inside the tunnel, which further affected the visibility in addition to causing breathing issues. The lethal combination can lead to major accidents. The relevant authorities should address the matter on an urgent basis.

UNDERAGE DRIVERS: One of the biggest reasons for the menace of reckless driving on the roads is the presence of underage drivers running unregistered Chingchi rickshaws and other loading vehicles. These drivers roam around the city rather freely, leading to traffic chaos and even accidents. The departments concerned have been approached more than once in this regard, but the requests tend to fall on deaf ears.

STUDENTS ON A HIGH: It is indeed concerning that college and university students are found involved in the consumption of illicit drugs and even alcohol. The menace is more prevalent in rural areas than in urban centres. There have been deaths and accidents owing to people driving while still under the influence of whatever they consume to get on a high. The government should take steps to control the sale and purchase of such stuff and to make people aware of the pitfalls of their unhealthy, illegal habits.

WATER SHORTAGE: Since the inception of Pakistan, the country has suffered on account of unjust distribution of Indus water. The government in Sindh blames its counterpart in Punjab and the federal government for halting the water flow that creates the water shortage. The provincial government must now act and resolve this matter as it is part of the federal setup as well.
