NEW DELHI: His Excellency the Viceroy will be leaving New Delhi by air for London at 8-30 a.m. on Sunday [May 18], says a communique issued from the Viceroy’s House. He will be accompanied by Her Excellency the Viscountess Mountbatten of Burma and a number of his staff… . The Viceroy, it is understood, was busy at his desk till the small hours of this morning studying the reactions of the Indian leaders to his proposals which he is believed to have communicated to them. No detail of his plan is known, apart from the fact that the division of India is a certainty.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Lahore,] There has been steady improvement in the situation in Lahore throughout the day, the District Magistrate Mr. Eustace told the API, tonight [May 17]. At 11 p.m. the situation is well in hand, the District Magistrate added. There were three cases of deliberate arson during the day… . Some of the fires, however, broke out again with the strong wind and the fire brigades were busy most of the day putting them out again. … The revised curfew hours will now be from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. for four days.
