PESHAWAR: A soldier was martyred in an attack on a military post in the Janikhel area of Bannu district, adjacent to North Waziristan, on Thursday night.

Separately, security forces killed a terrorist and arrested two others during an intelligence-based operation in Miramshah area of North Waziristan tribal district.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement that terrorists opened fire on the post late in the night. Security forces promptly responded to the firing and engaged the terrorists.

During the exchange of fire, soldier Sarfaraz Ali, 26, was martyred, the statement said. He belonged to Vehari area of Punjab.

The banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Members of security forces have been coming under TTP attacks since the proscribed organisation ended a month-long ceasefire in the area.

The ISPR said that the Miramshah IBO was carried out on reports of the presence of terrorists in the area. It said that arms and ammunition were recovered from the terrorists’ possession during the operation.
