KARACH: Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and Karachi administrator and chief minister’s law adviser barrister Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday inaugurated the addition of mini tippers to collect 100 per cent garbage from houses in Keamari and West districts.

Speaking on the occasion, the LG minister said: “It is very welcoming that Sindh Solid Waste Management Board is going to launch regular operation not only in Karachi, but also in other cities of the province.”

He congratulated the local officials and the Chinese company and appreciated their performance. “We thank the Chinese government for always helping us,” he added.

Responding to a question, the LG minister said that the mayor of Karachi would be the chairman of Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and he would have powers in the newly amended Sindh Local Government Act.

As for the protest against the amendments to the new LG law, he said that the Pakistan Peoples Party never blocked peaceful protests, adding that they went to the sit-in of the Jamaat-i-Islami for a dialogue.

“Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and his team are working hard to improve the local government laws,” he added.

Nasir Shah said that the situation would improve after door-to-door garbage collection in the city.

He said now only district Central was left where garbage collection from house to house would be started soon.

“Garbage will no longer be seen anywhere, we have to generate electricity from waste and move towards biogas plants,” he added.

City administrator Murtaza Wahab said that SSWMB was carrying out the responsibility of collecting garbage from all over Karachi.

“We are implementing the program to clean and make the city green. Soon we will start the operation of collecting garbage from house to house in the central district too,” he added.

The administrator said that the people of Karachi had realised who their sympathisers were.

“We are working on some big projects which will further improve the civic amenities,” he added.

The chief executive officer of the Chinese company Hangzhou also addressed the function and apprised the people of the steps being taken by the company for cleanliness in different districts of Karachi.

Secretary of local government Syed Najam Shah, deputy commissioner of Keamari, SSWMB DG Zubair Channa and other officers were also present.
