KARACHI: Long shot bay horse Kuwait Edition sprang a surprise defeating dark bay horse Young Gun as he pleased by 10 lengths to clinch the New Year Cup in the Gymkhana race meeting here at the Karachi Racecourse on Saturday.
With a win already under his belt, Kuwait Edition stretched his winning streak presenting owners Ehtisham Malik and Waiz Malik with a gift of new year.
Bay horses Piyara Faisal and Wild Fire occupied the next two places on board, respectively as favourite Shahbaz bit the dust finishing off the frame among six starters.
The victorious horse was piloted home by experienced rider Zaki Zakir who was on song with a treble having steered Angel Love and Smart Girl in the second and fourth races, respectively.
Favourite filly Angel Love justified her credentials by getting the better of Kiran Princess by three lengths while rank outsider mare Smart Girl created quite a stir imposing to a length-and-a-quarter victory over Balochistan Queen as favourite Eye of the Tiger failed to finish on board.
Both Angel Love and Smart Girl belong to the stables of Syed Sibghatullah Shah Pir Pagara and partnered by trainer Mohyuddin who too, celebrated the new year with a double.
At the outset, favourite bay horse Non Stop obliged all and sundry registering three lengths victory over Stifee to win the opening race.
Chestnut horse Burraq ended the pretensions of fancied Galileo Lady galloping home by a length-and-a-half to annex the third race.
