LAHORE, Nov 20: The international donors conference has been a success and by announcing generous assistance for rehabilitation of quake-hit people the world community have shown full confidence in the government.

This was stated by Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi while speaking at a function held at the Social Welfare Complex for distributing gifts and money among the affected families and children here on Sunday.

He said the conference was a success because of the best foreign policy, vision and international contacts of the president and the prime minister.

The chief minister said the provincial government too had sent Rs2 billion worth of relief goods to the affected areas and was continuously providing daily-use items to victims.

He said the World Bank had too announced a huge amount in the conference.

The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank would provide $1 billion each, indicating that the world community and institutions were satisfied with the government’s rehabilitation programme.

He said the provincial government’s Adopt-a-Family Programme was being appreciated at all levels. This project would help advance the government’s relief and rehabilitation plan, providing basic amenities to a large number of affected people.

He said the government was adopting all measures to provide accommodation and education to the affected children, besides making arrangements for their permanent rehabilitation.

He said the Lahore Child Protection Bureau was also working for this purpose. It was establishing a hostel for the 500 affected children where they would be provided with free accommodation, food and education. The government was extending the institution’s network throughout the province.

The chief minister appreciated efforts of the Social Welfare Department, the Child Protection Bureau and the PHA for rehabilitation of the earthquake-affected children.

He directed Lahore police to deploy guards at the Social Welfare Complex for security of the 500 families.

Later, he gave Rs10,000 to each family and Rs5,000 to each child.
