The Pantone Institute took a different route for its 2022's colour of the year, creating a brand new colour for its pick instead of selecting a pre-existing colour.

The institute has created a brand new shade for the first time in the 22-year history of Pantone’s colour of the year. The shade — PANTONE® 17-3938 Very Peri — belongs to the blue colour family and has a violet red undertone. The new shade is meant to "reflect what is taking place in our global culture" and "express what people are looking for".

Very Peri has been created to display a "sprightly joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imagination expressions".

According to TIME magazine, the new shade is an ode to the future which speaks to the "increasing influence of the virtual world, with the emergence of the Metaverse, recreational trends like VR gaming and esports and the growing popularity of cryptocurrency and NFTs".

Pantone's colour experts look at various aspects to determine its colour of the year. "These can include the entertainment industry and films in production, travelling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, play-styles, and socio-economic conditions."

In 2020, the institute chose the neutral Ultimate Gray and vibrant Yellow Illuminating shades as its colours of the year. They also launched a new shade of red that year to battle stigma against menstruation.
