Pakistani filmmaker Samar Minallah Khan won Best Short Film for her film Out Swing at the 7th Sport Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The win was announced on Twitter where the film creator was lauded for her work.

She received many congratulations on her big win.

The documentary trails a devoted coach who teaches cricket to young girls who find comfort and strength in learning the sport. The girls hail from traditional families where the youngest, at nine years old, wants to overcome her fears, anxiety and personal battles with the help of school and cricket.

In cricket terminology, out-swing means something that moves away from the lines of bowling. It comes with the risks of being called a wide ball but it could also be a game changer for the team.

Similarly, the coach in the film goes against the odds risking his life, with the girls ‘moving away’ from the norms and traditions women are expected to follow.

The documentary is set in the outskirts of Islamabad with visuals of the schoolgirls transitioning from house chores to school and doing what they find comforting.

Khan’s other works includes Swara — A Bridge over Troubled Waters, a documentary that raised questions around the practice that violates rights of a girl child and women. Swara is a term associated with forced marriages. The documentary gained international recognition for highlighting a sensitive yet important topic and drawing attention towards “compensation marriages.”

And the topic of the film is self pity and self shame again. It is a new recipe to win awards in Europe. Just find a controversial topic from Pakistan. Make a movie on it and present it in Europe and America. You are going to win the medals.

Well done. The options and resources for our girls venturing into sports cricket or football or other are limited in today's Pakistan. This is inherently linked with a misguided understanding of faith and gender and subject to societys double standards. Even in Palestine girls like boys compete in sports on international level too. Even in swimming. Before Taliban female athletes were in professionally competing even in the Olympics. We need to open up our minds because a girls gender should not dictate what she can or can't do. We neew to encourage and support our girls.

@Laila I agree completely. An egyptian hijabi woman won an Olympic gold medal recently. Pakistan needs to invest money in women sports too so more and more girls will be encouraged to pursue a career in sports.

Some Pakistanis think any independent film uses topic of the film of self pity and self shame again. they wrongly feel it is a new recipe to win awards in Europe. They find a controversial topic from Pakistan. Make a movie on it and present it in Europe and America. Hoping to win the medals & accolades. This is far from the truth. No country is so perfect that they have no social ills. So why does the West make films about the imperfections of their countries ? is it to win recognition? No its the hope mankind see learn from their mistakes and not repeat them & help humanity in the future. This constant attack if films from Pakistan have social ills must stop.
