LAHORE, Jan 24: The Punjab accountant general fired a senior auditor on Thursday for his alleged role in a Rs90.69 million fraud and referred his case to the Federal Investigation Agency for the recovery of Rs6.34 million.

It was alleged that Sajjad Maher, senior auditor at the AG’s Office, used to re-issue cheque returned to the Cheque Return Counter after they were rejected by various departments without referring them to the payroll section. Some of the re-issued cheques were found to be in excess of the original amount. The record was later destroyed.

An internal inquiry found the officer guilty. Assistant superintendent Abdur Razzaq Bhatti, senior auditor Muneeruddin and junior auditor Tariq Mahmood, were found to be his accomplices. They, too, have been fired from service.
