KARACHI: The syndicate of the NED University of Engineering and Technology in a meeting held on Friday decided to give admissions in its undergraduate programmes 2021 on the basis of marks candidates obtained in their respective secondary school certificate (SSC)/equivalent examinations.

The step was taken due to prolonged delay in the announcement of higher secondary certificate (HSC) results by various intermediate boards.

“I am informed that intermediate results would take another month or so. We can’t afford further delay in the start of the academic session and have decided to give admission on the basis of students’ matric results that we already have,” said Prof Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, the Vice Chancellor of the NED University of Engineering and Technology. Student fees constituted a major chunk of university’s income and delayed admissions would hurt smooth running of the institution, he explained.

Students’ admission will be cancelled if they fail to get minimum marks in Inter results

According to a university spokesperson, only those candidates would be eligible for admission who have qualified the pre-admission entry test of this university by securing 50 per cent or more marks (or defined scores in SAT-1 and SAT-2).

The first merit list would be released on 22nd of this month.

Seventy per cent weightage would be given to the entry test result held last month while the matric result would carry 30 per cent weightage.

There are no minimum percentage criteria for matric results and the admission would be offered on a provisional basis.

“An undertaking would be taken from students (of engineering, architecture and computer science departments) that their admission would stand cancelled, if they failed to get at least 60 per cent marks in the intermediate results.

“For the BS programme, the candidates need to secure at least 55 per cent marks in the intermediate results else their admission would be considered cancelled,” the spokesperson said.

For candidates having passed/attempted higher secondary certificate/equivalent examination during the years 2020, 2019 and 2018 will have 0.9 per cent of total SSC/equivalent examination marks deducted for preparing the merit list of respective categories.

Applications would be considered against the category reserved for the board where the candidate has appeared for his or her HSC/equivalent examination (except some reserved categories).

Interviews for candidates will start from 25 October.

The classes for First Year students would start from Nov 22 while the classes of Second Year will start from Monday next week.

It might be recalled that the syndicate in an earlier meeting had given powers to the administration to decide whether admission should be given on the basis of matric or intermediate result. The matter was again taken up by the syndicate for a final decision on Friday.
