GILGIT: A clean and green Nagar initiative was launched on Tuesday to make the district an eco-friendly tourist destination.
Deputy commissioner Zulqarnain Khan, officials of the district administration, political, civil society and environmental activists attended the project’s launching ceremony.
Nagar district is a famous tourist destination in Gilgit-Baltistan, and is home to dozens of peaks, including Rakaposhi, Diran, Golden Peak and the Biafo glacier, the second largest after the polar region.
A set of three colorful segregated dustbins was installed at the main public, tourist points and commercial areas of the district along the Karakoram Highway.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Zulqarnain said it was the first project of its kind in the district, solely funded from the local sources. He said the initiative was meant to make Nagar an environmentally friendly tourist destination.
He requested the people, including the tourists, to use the dustbins. He every tourist and locals should play their role to sustain ecology of the area.
Mr Zulqarnain said the project would be extended to whole of the district.
