Mahira Khan and Ayesha Omar appeal to PM Imran to get the domestic violence bill approved

The bill needs to be passed to protect women from abuse, the actors said on Twitter.
04 Aug, 2021

Actors Mahira Khan and Ayesha Omar recently appealed to Prime Minister Imran Khan on social media, asking the premier to take the necessary steps to get the Domestic Violence Protection and Prevention Bill, 2021 passed in parliament

The bill — which was initially passed by the National Assembly — was referred back to the Lower House of Parliament after the Senate suggested amendments to the law, citing concerns regarding various contents of the bill. The bill was then sent for review by the Council of Islamic Ideology — a decision that was heavily criticised on social media.

Following the tragic killing of Noor Mukadam on July 21, many people have renewed their call for the bill to be passed. Mahira posted a Twitter appeal to PM Imran and said as long as there aren't any laws in place, women will always be vulnerable to abuse.

She made the appeal whilst praising the PM's recent comments on Mukadam's case. "People say that the alleged killer comes from a rich and influential family, because of which he might escape due punishment," the premier had said. "Let me tell you, no one will escape punishment here. He wont escape even if he's a dual national with an American citizenship."

Actor Ayesha Omar also replied to Mahira's post. Tagging PM Imran, she said, "I second this. This should definitely be a priority right now. This bill needs to be passed and laws put in place. So many women are regularly facing Domestic abuse and it is dismissed as being 'a personal home matter'. Women need to be protected."

Many people commented on both posts, seconding their requests to the prime minister to get the bill passed on an urgent basis so that women and children are offered more legal protection from the state.

Both want a bill against women's abuse. And their dresses are so provocative. Isn't it better to be safe from your side at least?

It is true that some women suffered from domestic abuse, which must be condemned at all levels. However, by seeing western and American culture, our women in Pakistan are more respectful and 99% of women in Pakistan are living happily. I too agree that women must have freedom by all means, but do check or study about the abuse that happened to the women in western/american society. Over there, life is extremely hard for women, they have to be worried about bread and butter on the daily basis along with respect and dignity. However, in Pakistan or even in India/Bangladesh our women are more protected and enjoy life while husbands, brothers, and fathers provide shelter and food with respect and dignity. I truly felt sad about the Noor incident, however, I also felt sad that as per reports, Noor contacted his killer millions of times but contacted her father only 3 times in a year. Child and parent need to be in touch with each other and we must support the culture of "being a family".

Did he introduce and implement all the anti-rape and anti-violence bills at YOUR request? He is clearly the best, most caring PM Pakistan has had. No cheap point scoring, please?

Imran khan has sent it to the Islamic council so it is in line with the values of Islamic Republic, Pakistan always had outside influences to tailor make the laws so it helps with keeping the country rocking, Imran khan knows this and he ain't no fool. Just trust him and watch. Never rush into things, it's important to do it right the first time.

i will be more appreciative of these women when they can actually let the women for whom they want to pass this bill to sit within them and protest with them. There will always be doubt of publicity stunt if the people you are raising voice for are the very people you neglect yourself and don't want anywhere near you.

@ST ... What a narrow minded, thoughtless comment. It appears to be deliberate in order to stir up controversy. If this is your genuine thought process, you need first to look at yourself before pointing fingers at others who are trying to do good.

@ST their dresses are their choice as they have equal human rights whereas you are not legally entitled to object their any action if it s not in violation of constitution. I know yours is long journey from medieval times to 21st century- but start with small steps & eventually you will reach in world of reality of 21st century.

@UZ 99% women in Pakistan are happy? What a fantasy!!! Voila. You think these women who start producing kids without break from age of 17/18-keep on producing dozens of mal-nourished kids, cook for all joint families 24/7- compelled to sleep with husband by husband each nite to satisy his casual, careless sex leading to children ,their pains in maternity, are happy? You are some very cruel man. Should I say,a true speciman of a Pakistani male!

laws r existing already there is no need for fresh legislation on the subject. already inflicting physical injury to any one or causing intimidation r offences in pakistan penal code, so if any one is aggrieved, can approach police. why gender specific laws. women inflict physical and spiritual torture on males which goes without any notice. 50 males can live together but two women can never live together.

@UZ I’m sorry but your views are misguided. . Don’t know where you’re getting 99% of women living happily in Pakistan when about 85% of them have been subjected to violence by their husbands. Even if 85% women in Pakistan enjoy being beaten, you’ve still got the wrong figure.

Who cares? Their word has no more value than anyone else in Pakistan, given how they love in fact it actually has less. Just because their celebrities doesn't mean anything they say has additional weight. PM Khan should ignore them and if these court jesters start getting more and more political then put them in their place. They should stick to entertainment.

@Chrís Dăn You're not even a Pakistani, so why do you think anyone from Pakistan will pay heed to what your irrelevant opinions are? It's like a North Korean trying to lecture Canada. Pakistan is a Muslim state, naturally the laws will be on Islamic values. Get out of your Euro-centric box and open your mind a little.

If PM IK really cares about women and doesn’t mean to label them as “vulgar” and “provocative “ then he must pass a viable “Noor Bill” to protect women and children from domestic violence . It’s a soul searching moment for PM IK . It doesn’t make any sense to get CII Involved , it’s a crime to hurt anyone

@Toni I am a woman myself and I know women are abused too. But at least we can do our part to stay bit safe by at least not showing our bodies and luring the weak psychopathic minds. Predators and abusers have to bear their own consequences.

Its great that our celebrities are involved, but I would ask them to at least invest a little more and try to understand what the actual bill is instead of just reading the title. Also, know that besides the bill women are already protected through the Women's Protection Bill. So even if there are issues of women, there is a bill that can protect them.
