TOKYO: Britain’s Oliver Townend, Laura Collett and Tom McEwen on Monday won Olympic team gold in equestrian eventing, bringing the top medal back to Britain after decades of the country coming second, while Germany’s Julia Krajewski won individual gold.

Australia claimed the silver medal, improving on their third place in Rio 2016, and defending champions France took bronze.

Britain’s Tom McEwen, world number five, clocked in with individual silver and Australia’s Andrew Hoy took bronze.

The 32-year-old Krajewski, ranked world number 48, became the first woman to win individual eventing gold at the Olympics, eclipsing Britain’s world number one Townend, who was fifth.

British riders had won eventing team silver at the Olympics in Los Angeles, Seoul, Sydney, Athens and London, and bronze in Beijing.
