German gymnasts fight against sexualisation by wearing full-body suits at Tokyo Olympics

The women's gymnastics team opted to wear full-length unitards instead of the traditional bikini-cut leotards.
28 Jul, 2021

The German women's gymnastics team opted to wear full-body suits in qualifications at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday in a move they said was designed to promote freedom of choice and encourage women to wear what makes them feel comfortable.

The team, composed of Sarah Voss, Pauline Schaefer-Betz, Elisabeth Seitz and Kim Bui, competed in red and white unitards, which are combined leotards and leggings extending to the ankles. They wore similar outfits during training on Thursday and said they could chose to wear them again in competition.

Voss said the team had discussed their choice of attire before competing on Sunday and had settled on the unitard. "As you are growing up as a woman, it is quite difficult to get used to your new body in a way," the 21-year-old said.

"We want to make sure everyone feels comfortable and we show everyone that they can wear whatever they want and look amazing, feel amazing, whether it is in a long leotard or a short one."

Voss said the team — which wore full-body suits at the European championships in April in a move aimed at countering the sexualisation of the sport — were keen for the trend to catch on. "We want to be a role model in any case, to make everybody have the courage to follow us," Voss said.

The Germans' decision to wear unitards earned them praise from fellow competitors in Tokyo.

"I think it's really cool that they have the guts to stand on such a huge arena and show girls from all over the world that you can wear whatever you want," said Norwegian gymnast Julie Erichsen. "I applaud them for that."

In recent years gymnastics has been rocked by widespread cases of sexual and physical abuse, prompting the introduction of new safety protocols meant to protect athletes.

For women, the standard competition outfit is a leotard, with long, half-length sleeved and sleeveless garments allowed.Outfits covering legs are authorised in international competitions but to date they have been worn almost exclusively for religious reasons.

In July, Norway’s women's beach handball team had also protested against sexualisation in the sport by opting to wear shorts instead of bikini bottoms at a European championship match in Bulgaria. The team was fined 1,500 Euros ($1,764) for being "improperly dressed" as per the regulations.

To those cheering under the guise of being in favour of "modest" dress for women, I guess you won't be satisfied until women swimmers and sprinters et all in the Olympics compete in burqa. After all, that is your ultimate yardstick for modesty. What about male athletes being more modest about displaying their manhood and bulging muscles, from gymnastics to the pool and running and jumping tracks? Are they not a turn-on for women and the LGBTI community? What's good for the goose should be good for the gander.

At last some realization that sexualization / objectification is one of the most basic reasons for sexual harassment of women. Still a long way to go to understand that its not just about covering the body. You need to cover the body in a way that you dont sexualize it sadly the current attire falls short of that still. Eventually, women will have to admit that their physique and appearance make it impossible for them to pursue competitive sports where a toned body is displayed openly without them being sexualized. The question they will have to ask themselves then is whether it is worth it to be sexualized / objectified in order to prove themselves in something as fickle as sports. Priorities need to be sorted.

@ashar that is not the realization. The realization is that as freefemales and citizens they own their bodies and it is their choice to wear what they feel comfortable with as long as it does not impede in their sports or competing. Their body, their choice. Male gymnasts don't wear leotards after all. From your comment i assume you will be happy with Pakistani females becoming gymnasts and competing inside and outside Pakistani in the same outfits as these western female athletes.

Female gymnasts in Pakistan. None. Vollyball teams? None. I admire the fervour with which mostly Pakistani guys are busy advocating, encouraging and cheering foreign female athletes. Where is this support for Pakistani females? Forget outfits, why are Pakistani females not allowed to do the same sports. Even a girl bicycling is seen a immodest and discouraged. Imagine a female gymnast and our society will have a meltdown. True hypocrisy.

@Malakmd dress of a woman doesn't encourage rape or harassment. That is a myth which has been debunked. Animals, men, boys, and women in their homes get raped too. Should we make them dress fully covered too? It is up to man to control his urges. I suggest you study Islam. Nowhere in Islam is a man excuse from raping or harassing. He is 100% responsible. Otherwise you can also make this excuse for non Muslim people who attack Muslims, because they felt provoked by their beard or dress. It works both ways. If somebodg can't control yourself, then he needs to stay home anevbnot to out. There is no excuse for touching somebody against their will.

@Mushtaq tokyo stop telling Pakistanis to leave their country and migrate elsewhere just because you can't respect or tolerate the natural plurality and diversity of opinion. I don't know any other country where citizens tell other citizens to migrate elsewhere if they don't agree with others. It's a very strange way of handlig discourse. Pakistanis are not a homogenous lump of people who all agree on all topics. We are humans not robots. We have different opinions. Be tolerant of others opinions and don't tell women how to dress. They don't need your approval or permission. The German and Norwegian teams showed just that point. And PMIK is and was wrong. He is peddling rape myths. Not facts. Dress has nothing to do with being raped. Pthreiswwe must also cover up animals, pubescent boys, men and children because they get raped here in Pakistan too. And PMIK completely ignores this in his absurd argument. That's why he is being criticised and rightfully so.
