THERE are serious concerns about the future of Afghanistan as American troops have left the country after about 20 years. The government of Pakistan is on record having publicly stated that it would accept any democratic setup in Afghanistan.

With the Taliban forces moving along, there is a possibility that Kabul may fall to them at some point in time. Once this happens, they will have the right to re-establish diplomatic relationship with countries around the world. With their ideology being what it is, one knows what they stand for and would implement in areas under their control. There is a likelihood of refugee influx in Pakistan just as it had happened earlier.

In view of the deeply complex nature of the Afghan situation, there is a need for a serious national debate, both in parliament as well as in the media. Once, and if, Kabul falls, should we go along with the international community or should we recognise such a government?
