KARACHI, Oct 24: An anti-terrorism court adjourned on Monday the hearing of case pertaining to a plot to kill President Parvez Musharraf against a worker of the banned Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Aalmi after recording the statement of a prosecution witness.

Judge Aley Maqbool Rizvi, who earlier convicted three top leaders of the banned outfit in the instant case, fixed Nov 7 for the next hearing after deposition by police constable Mohammed Arif, who was also cross-examined by the defence attorney.

Naveedul Hassan, who was earlier declared absconder is being tried for his involvement in an abortive attempt on the life of the president in April 2003. He has been charged with hatching a conspiracy to blow up president’s motorcade. It was alleged that a Suzuki pick-up laden with explosives was parked near Falak Naz Arcade on Sharea Faisal and absconding accused Kamran had the remote control to blow up explosives.

Accused Kamran, who had positioned himself at a petrol pump near Star Gate on the Sharea Faisal, allegedly pushed the remote control button several times but the vehicle did not blow up.

Accroding to the charge sheet, accused Naveed allegedly assembled the explosive devise and its remote control.

According to the prosecution, the Aalmi leaders, during interrogation, revealed that they wanted to kill President Musharraf for his anti-Taliban and pro-US policies.

The prosecution is being represented by Special Public Proseuctor Maula Bux Bhatti.

VAN ATTACK CASE: An anti-terrorism court adjourned the hearing of the Rangers van attack case against two workers of the banned Jundullah group after partial cross-examination of investigation officer Inspector Riaz Ahmed.

Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-2 put off hearing till Oct 29 when defence counsel M R Syed would complete the cross-examination of the investigation officer.

Ataur Rehman and Shahzad Ahmed Bajwa have been charged with attacking a Ranger’s mobile van near Baloch Colony bridge on March 19, 2004.

INDICTED: Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3 indicted an accused in a kidnapping for ransom case.

The judge fixed Tuesday for the next hearing after Zahid Sagheer denied the charges and pleaded “not guilty”. The judge ordered special public prosecutor Naimat Ali Randhawa to produce prosecution witnesses on the next date.

According to the prosecution, accused Zahid Sagheer along with absconding accused Fahad Masod, S. M. Nadeem, Imtiaz and Shahid kidnapped 22-year-old Syed Shahid Ahmed on Feb 2 within the limits of Sachal police and demanded Rs2.5 million for his release from his brother Syed Mohammed Serwar.

Zahid Sagheer was allegedly arrested on Feb 6 in Landhi where the victim was kept. The police recovered the victim from Sagheer’s house during the raid.

DIG ATTACK CASE: Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC-5 put off hearing of the DIG attack case after recording the statement of DIG Manzoor Mughul.

The judge fixed Oct 27 for the next hearing after special public prosecutor Mazhar Qayyum examined the DIG as prosecution witness.

DIG investigation Manzoor Mughul escaped unhurt from life attempt allegedly committed by the accused who came to the DIG’s office to submit his application regarding expedite investigation into his case.

The accused allegedly fired a bullet on the DIG but he narrowly escaped and the accused was arrested. An illegal pistol and live bullets were allegedly seized from his possession.
