PARIS, Oct 20: French champions Lyon took another step towards their dream of winning European club football’s most coveted prize with a precious 2-1 win over Greek side Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Lyon, who seem to be going from strength to strength, join Bayern Munich and Arsenal as the only unbeaten teams with 100 percent records in the group stages so far.

Lyon, quarterfinalists last year, came out top of the pile Wednesday as Italian giants Inter Milan went down 2-0 at FC Porto, allowing Portugal’s 2004 winners to revive their flagging campaign in group H.

Premiership pacesetters Chelsea gave Real Betis a 4-0 beating at Stamford Bridge to secure their lead of group G, where reigning champions Liverpool - also now with two wins and a draw - had Djibril Cisse to thank for a precious 1-0 win away to Anderlecht in Brussels.

AC Milan beat Fenerbahce 3-1 at the San Siro, however the Italians - who won the trophy in 2003 - lead a tight group F with only a point on the Turkish side.

It leaves Lyon, Bayern and Arsenal with a fine chance of securing qualification for the last 16 with room to spare - a huge advantage in a competition in which fatigue and overplay can play havoc with ambitions.

Going on their ability to create chance after chance, Lyon have every right to stake their claim for a place in next May’s final.

A full-strength Lyon topped Group F coming into the match after impressive wins over Real Madrid and Rosenborg and they were immediately on top of a Greek side looking to bag their first point and who lost at home in their domestic league at the weekend.

Nevertheless it took a late strike from France winger Sidney Gouvou with two minutes to go to make it three wins out of three.

The Olympiakos defence made the mistake of giving away a free-kick 25 metres out, and were left spellbound as Brazilian dead ball specialist Juninho stepped forward to bend a marvellous right-footer round the wall and into the top left-hand corner of the net.

Olympiakos came out revived and rather more determined in the second half. It almost handed them a share of the points when Pantelis Kafes equalised with six minutes to go with a superb lob of Gregory Coupet in the Lyon goal.

The Greeks were pushing for a much-needed winner but they left gaps at the back and it was Govou who struck at the other end after running on to a cross from Juninho to flick the ball into the net.

Lyon were prevented from a semi-final appearance last time out after PSV Eindhoven dominated them on penalties.

This time, Lyon coach Gerard Houllier will be hoping they arrive at that stage with plenty of energy to spare.

“All we need is one more point to mathematically qualify for the last 16,” affirmed Houllier positively.

“I’m delighted we won like we did because it shows the kind of character in this team against a tough Olympiakos side.

“It’s the first time we’ve won our first three group matches. We’ve taken a big step towards qualilfying, but let’s remain objective.

The Frenchman, called in to replace Paul Le Guen last year, would be forgiven for having one eye on his former club Liverpool, who have blossomed under his successor at Anfield, Rafael Benitez.

Flamboyant striker Cisse, who was mocked at home last week as he missed chance after chance for France against Cyprus in their 4-0 World Cup qualifying victory, was on target in Belgium.

Cisse’s first half effort lifted Liverpool on to seven points in Group G and needing only one win from their final three group games to make it into the next round.

Cisse, reflecting on mission accomplished on this, Liverpool’s first return to Brussels since the 1985 Heysel stadium tragedy, said: “Even though Anderlecht don’t have any points you should never underestimate them, but tonight they’re finishing was a little untidy.”

England striker Jonathan Woodgate meanwhile regained the faith of Real Madrid’s fans - following a howler of an own goal on his Real debut - by scoring the opener in the Spanish giants’ 4-1 demolition of group F rivals Rosenborg.

The Norwegian hosts had scored in the first half through Roar Strand however Woodgate levelled shortly after the restart and from then on it was all one-way as Raul Gonzalez, Ivan Helguera and David Beckham contributed.

Nine-times former champions Real are now second in the group behind Lyon.
