KARACHI, Oct 12: Anarchy prevails in Muzaffarabad, which is hampering relief operation in the town hit by a powerful earthquake that razed most of the town into rubble, Edhi volunteers said.

According to an Edhi spokesman, the volunteers are facing problems in carrying out rescue operation as there was a complete chaos.

They claimed that two trucks heading towards the town from Peshawar were waylaid and robbed of the relief goods. Besides, windowpanes of two Edhi ambulances were smashed after they were pelted with stones.

The spokesman claimed that a rescue team from Britain refused to carry out relief operation owing to lawlessness in the town. He said the Edhi volunteers had been working despite all hurdles. They had shifted hundreds of injured to hospitals in Rawalpindi and Abottabad. Most of the routes to and from Bagh were not cleared. Edhi ambulances shifted 60 injured to Mehran Base in Muzaffarabad from where they were airlifted to different Pakistan Army officials.

Abdul Sattar Edhi has expressed his anguish over the looting spree by unidentified people and appealed to them not to create hurdles in the rescue work.

Meanwhile, the Edhi Foundation has said that a centre has been established in London to receive donations for the quake-hit victims. The centre is working 24-hours.

Residents of a locality in Birmingham, hailing from Haripur, have donated 6,500-pound sterling to the Edhi Foundation.
