THIS is with reference to the report ‘Mari Petroleum awarded four blocks’ (Jan 28) for exploration by the Petroleum Commission. Pakistan needs oil and gas for energy generation, for running its industries, and for domestic needs. There is a need for a comprehensive strategy to be evolved on a priority basis.

There is no doubt that the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) is concentrating on drilling wells, but the success rate is not up to the optimum level. Companies working in the field must be extended full assistance so that there may be no impediment in the way of safe drilling operations.

If we succeed in exploring oil and gas, a hefty import bill on petroleum products and LNG can be addressed. Also, coal plants will be phased out which will be great as they are contributors to pollution levels and smog.
