Jameela Jamil wants influencers to stop promoting the keto diet

"Take it from someone who did every diet under the sun, the weight comes back thick and fast as soon as you reintroduce carbs."
17 Jan, 2021

Are you looking for a fast-track solution to shed that extra weight? Are you considering the heavily social media-promoted keto diet to achieve your dietary goals? Actor and activist Jameela Jamil is here to tell you why that's a really bad idea...

"Celebrities and influencers. Please stop pushing the keto diet (on)to people who do not need to follow the diet for medical reasons," Jamil began in the message. "It can create all kinds of disturbances for people's bodies, (including their vital organs), and they do not have the same access to healthcare that you do."

She also took this opportunity to point out the hypocrisy in 'before-after' pictures, stating that the latter is obviously the result of extreme editing.

A photo posted by Instagram (@instagram) on

"Stop with the (often bulls***) before and afters (especially the ones where in the 'after' your trousers are higher/your bra is more supportive/your hair and makeup is done/you're smiling/the lighting is better/you're using airbrushing) during the predatory time for women especially around their weight."

Addressing the public, she also debunked myths related to the keto diet in general.

"To anyone seeing these posts about keto and 2-week weight loss, it's water weight, not real fat loss, and take it from someone who did every diet under the SUN, the weight comes back thick and fast and then some as soon as you reintroduce carbs," she revealed.

"Most humans need carbs," The Good Place actor added, before telling fans to "stay away" from fad diets. "If you really want to change your body to whatever, please do it for the right reasons, the right way, slowly, not guided by some newfound thin-fluencer and their fast weight loss guru/predator."

She also included several screenshots of what appeared to be direct messages from fans, who shared their horror stories following the diet.

From pancreatitis to gall-badder removal and brain level imbalances, the after-effects shared by the people should give everyone pause.

"Don’t take my word for it. Just read every medical journal article you can find on it. Learn the history of it, and if you fit that history, if you need it medically, I hear it can be extraordinary for certain serious health issues," Jameela added.

"But if not ... you are needlessly risking creating health issues because our world not only obsesses over weight loss, but how fast we can do it. That is not sustainable and it’s designed to fail so that you stay on the diet merry-go-round forever," she said.

Encouraging a healthier relationship with nutrition that doesn't involve binaries of good and bad, the star hoped her fans would be grateful for the food on their table. A much-needed reminder for all of us.

Off carbs for more than a year now, never felt better. Our bodies can make its own glucose so no need for carbs. Btw i do have a huge bowl of green salad everyday, but its mostly fibre (which doesn’t get digested by our bodily enzymes but gut microbiome). All my Cholesterol, blood sugar, insulin and triglyceride markers are completely normal as well. But whatever floats her boat....

I did follow keto diet almost 2 year back. Lost around 12 kgs in 3 months. Since then not followed keto diet and eaten all kind of junk food. No exercise and still have just gained 2-3 kgs. It works. Test this eat non spicy chicken at night without any carbs. Next day in morning you will feel hungry. Next day eat less chicken but with 3-4 rotis. You will not feel that hungry as you did a day before. Which means your stomach likes fat and burn it easily. It doesn't burn carb easily so need time to process.

I had at least 10 diseases - liver to the kidney to bone etc. Low carb diet solved all my problems and disease. My next goal is low carb and low saturated fat diet. Subcontinent people eat only carbs neglecting healthy oil and protein intake.

Have been on a low carb diet for the past 3 years. My sugar levels are under control (I am diabetic for over 20 years). Have stopped taking my tablets. All tests are normal. She can complain because this simple diet does not serve her purpose!

May be the pharmaceutical mafia is paying her for people to remain unhealthy by avoiding keto. As if u follow keto I can go without medicines of blood pressure; diabetes; fatty liver; obesity; and many many more.

I honestly believe she doesn’t know much about Keto. It is NOT a new diet! It’s been around since the early 1900. I am not on it for my weight but for my epilepsy and it has been helping me! Keto isn’t for everyone. Just like certain medications are not for everyone. Maybe she shouldn't be on Keto but that doesn’t mean it don’t help people! Maybe she needs to watch what she tells people as her opinions are just that opinions!

Finally an influencer with brains. Instead of all these short term dieting fads, why not incorporate a food lifestyle where one doesn’t need to worry about carbs, proteins or fats? I have been on a Whole Foods plant based with very low oil eating lifestyle since the past one year. I have lost over 10 kgs in body weight and I am eating more than I have ever eaten previously. Full nutrition, full taste and no guilt.

Love Jamila. She isn't against keto as such, she is more against it being promoted by influencers. People need to consult their nutritionists, doctors or health care provider to make sure the diet suits them. Every body is different and food reacts differently. This no carb fad diet in the US is harmful for many people. Again celebs promoting things have lots of money to pay for in case anything goes wrong with their health. The average american doesn't. Yes you can cut off bad carbs like soda and candy.

If you weigh 65 kilos, take a diet of 1500 calories per day, you will come to your best possible healthy body weight. For all other body weights, there is a simple regime of adding proportional calories for under weight and reducing calories below 1500 for overweight.

There is a golden diet rule that works for all humans but, difficult to follow. It says, remove "4- whites" from your diet completely. The 4-whites are, white sugar, white flour, white oil and white salt. If you want to know the reason, then read the book "Diet and Common Sense"

Each person's metabolism is different, so what works for one person may not work for another. Certain foods can cause harm in the long run, as some people may have conditions they are unaware of, and only when symptoms worsen, become chronic or increasingly interfere with the body's functioning, do they seek medical attention. Acidity, gall stones, irritable bowel syndrome (ibs), malabsorption, liver disorders, etc. all require dietary adjustments and the elimination or addition of certain foods to the diet, which must be taken into account in order to lose weight sensibly.

vegetables are actually carbohysrates most people on keto eat 7-10 cups a day they just happen to be higher in fibre than most other carbs.ketoers tend to avoid the processed ones that give a high insulin response and poor quality.

@Sab Se Pehle Pakistan I have been saving on average 70% more money on Keto+Intermittent fasting regimen than when i was on regular diet. Impulsive junk food snacking and the resulting health related costs (hospital fee+drugs) need to be accounted as well. I save tons by steering clear of sodas, desserts, pizzas, burgers. Over time, you don’t even have to exert will power to resist junk food because your unhealthy gut micro biome gets replaced by healthier one and it only demands pure food from brain via hormone signalling.

The Keto diet is a medical diet and is incredibly effective if you are smart enough to execute it right. But for America where hordes of people lack critical thinking, I agree that the Keto diet can be quite dangerous.

Adequate hydration and electrolyte supplementation is vital to eating a Keto diet safely, and the private messages she provided all seem like issues that could stem from entering ketosis without drinking more water.

Look up medical evidence of what a carb(sugar) rich diet does to a body. Another uneducated Anti-Keto article. Eating healthy whole foods prepared at home that are no or low carb is so many times better than a carb rich (sugar) diet. Keep people sick, medicated and in hospitals yes that's the answer.

I lost more than 66pounds in one and half year, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are getting normal by following Keto diet with intermittent fasting. Keto diet allows healthy green vegetable carbs as much as we can eat with limited protein and fat. Only unhealthy carbs are avoided.

Of course the weight comes back on if you reintroduce carbs. Why would it not? If you switch to a 750 calorie per day diet and lose 100 lbs.. Then reintroduce 3000 calories a day, the weight will come back. A keto diet is not short term.. It is forever. Then the weight stays off. The problem is the carbs. You can never eat 300 to 500 carbs per day. That is the problem. That is the cause of diabetes, heart disease, obesity. Of course you can't go back to doing it.

I’ve done Keto and lost 50 lbs initially. I maintained for a long time and honestly I was feeling so much better. I had much more energy, MUCH better sleep than before and it saved my joints from more damage. Keto changed my life for the better. And it IS sustainable. There is so much garbage food out there that is 10x more damaging to health than a low carb diet. Also, what isn’t said ever, is that as your body changes, you HAVE to adjust your keto diet. If you start working out more, add more carbs to your routine. I think (and maybe this is Jameela’s point here) people look at Keto as a one-size-fits-all diet thinking you just go for it. But you do have to adjust Macros to your specific needs, which change as your body changes. However, even though keto isn’t for everyone, there’s no need to completely tear it down because you have some sort of negative emotional connection to it.

Just watch the movie documentary "Fat Fiction " That documentary explains most of what you need to know. Keto is a lifestyle. Not just a diet. You can't go on keto and back on carbs over and over. You will have issues. Especially when you are eating crappy fast food with no nutritional value. People eat way to much sugar. Average person eats over 200 pound of sugar a year. Tell me that's good for you. The average doctor gets 20 minutes to 2 hours of nutritional training over the 8 to 10 years of medical training. You get sick from your crappie diet and all they do is give you pills. They don't tell you that your high carb diet is the issue with your health because they are uninformed. Besides that, that can't make money off people who aren't sick. My doctor is in way worst health than I'll ever be. That's because he follows the standard western diet recommended by the governments dietary guidelines. What a joke! Look into it like what was suggested by Jamee. Look at some of the Thomas Delauer videos on YouTube. He will inform you. Well, I'll leave it up to you. If want to stay fat and have poor health just keep eating the standard western diet. Good Luck!
