FAISALABAD, Jan 20: The provincial government has reportedly decided to replace all peace committees at district and tehsil levels with ulema boards by the end of this month.
Official source told Dawn on Sunday that district governments and police chiefs had been directed to send lists of religious scholars and khateebs who were not members of peace committees.
He said the government had directed them to include young religious scholars in the new boards so that they could monitor the working of madaris and mosques in a better way.
Ulema boards would be represented by all sects, including Barelvi, Sunni, Deoband and Fiqa Jaferia, while the district khateeb of Auqaf department would be its head. The Zila Nazim and district coordination officer would work as chairman and secretary, respectively, he said.
“Intelligence agencies have also been asked to send lists of ulema who have no links with any political parties”, he said.
Members of new boards would motivate the people about policies of the government especially regarding madaris and mosques, he added.
FOUR KILLED: Four persons were killed in different road accidents in and around the city here on Sunday.
Sub-inspector Ghulam Murtaza along with his two friends — Zulfiqar and Yousaf was on his way by a car. As they reached on the Faisalabad-Sumundri Road, their vehicle hit a stationary truck, injuring the three seriously. They were rushed to the Allied Hospital where Zulfiqar died while the condition of Murtaza and Yousaf was stated to be critical.
A boy, Muhammad Majid, was knocked down and killed by a speeding tractor-trolley in Chak 78-GB of Saddar police station.
Another tractor-trolley hit a villager, Khizar Hayat, in Chak 238-RB. He died on the spot.
A motorcyclist, Ghulam Sarwar, was killed when a speeding car knocked him down in Chak 186-RB.
