Dr Noam Chomsky is all set to deliver a lecture at Habib University

The father of modern linguistics, according to The New York Times, is arguably the most important intellectual alive.
Updated 05 Dec, 2020

It is no surprise that Habib University's Yohsin lectures, an important event arranged in the honour of their annual graduating batch, are always one to make headlines.

While last year Reza Azlan, author of world's best-seller No God But God made it to Karachi, this year mesmerising the audiences with his brilliant virtual talk, will be none other than Dr Noam Chomsky.

American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, social critic, and political activist, Chomsky according to The New York Times, is arguably the "most important intellectual alive."

His lecture will be titled “Bullet dodged or merely delayed: Reflections on the future of democracy, nuclear threat and the looming environmental catastrophe in a post Trumpian world," and will be available to the general public on the 7th of December, 2020 at 6:15 PM (PST).

Having authored over a 100 books ranging from linguistics to politics to mass media in his long and illustrious career, Chomsky is currently serving as a Laureate Professor at the University of Arizona, and Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

It’s known that many around the world breathed a deep sigh of relief when it became clear that Joe Biden had finally defeated Donald Trump in the recent U.S. presidential election, seemingly ending a dark chapter in U.S. and world history. But is it too early to take comfort?

You can tune in to the lecture on Facebook or Habib University's Youtube platform and find out.

As the international scholar will sign in from across the world to engage with students as well as the public on a topic of global importance, here's hoping the series works towards cultivating engaged, thoughtful citizens who are locally grounded and globally aware.

Much needed, new students should aware about the importance of linguistics research and the impact of it in the various other field of studies and how it can open new ways to have an improvement in our society and behavior as an individual, back in 2000s it's quite trendy to have such discussions as this, which eventually got disappear due to nationalism and communism, but good to know that educational institutes are reviving it.

@Mansoor K. If you know what he is about, you will get your answer right away! US is no longer the US it used to be.. It is a more suffocated society that is self-serving under the Trump regime. Media is an empire and whoever is a threat will not be represented for the view against it in this case Jews. Mainly his view is pro-Palestinian and being a Zionist Jew that is a crime. He has boycotted many Isrelie led conferences and is vocal about Israeli policies on the concept of the promised land and treatment of new jews (Muslims and Christians). US media is overwhelmingly controlled by a Jewish lobby. So you go figure. !!

Great news. I hope Dr Chomsky will also talk about the recently ratified and passed international nuclear weapons ban treaty . Its was formally ratified by 50 UN member states on 24th October 2020 and in January 2021 it will become binding international law. ICAN, the Nobel Prize winning organisation , is now campaigning to get this international law implemented. What would it mean for the countries with nuclear weapons? How far will this succeed in bringing these countries (including Pakistan and India ) to book? It's strange that this matter is being completely ignored in most nuclear armed countries. It must be openly discussed. Nuclear weapons must be banned and given up by all human beings.

Dr. Noam Chomsky what a gentleman. It is an honor to have him in Pakistan, I only wish most Americans are smart enough to listen to him, trillions wasted in wars what good came out Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Vietnam etc., now they are thinking to attack Iran which will create havoc on this earth. Bless you Sir and I'm eagerly waiting to listen to your lecture. Indeed we need more anti war and humanist souls like Dr Chomsky. We adore and admire people like Dr Chomsky. Love from Pakistan.

@AAA on Linguistik research: All European Languages have two Main Verbs. First : to be - Second: to have. Neither Arabic nor Indian Languages have a Verb to have! This difference refelects the values of many cultures without their Need for Posession.

@Mansoor K. Chomsky himself once said that PBS would not feature him because he lacked concession, he takes too long to answer a question, in addition to this, he doesn’t support Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. You can no longer be featured in the American press unless you’re pro Israel.
