A new beginning

Published November 30, 2020

THIS refers to the editorial ‘A new beginning’ (Nov 8). The Americans have gone through a turbulent election in the midst of the raging Covid-19 pandemic. Joseph Biden is the president-elect, ably supported by Kamala Harris as the vice president-elect on the Democratic ticket.

Just like Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush emerged victorious in 1980 after an insipid and lacklustre one-term Carter presidency, history seems to have repeated itself after four decades in the shape of the Biden-Kamala team that has emerged triumphant after an odd, erratic and unpredictable one-term Trump presidency.

Biden’s has a heavy agenda ahead of him; both domestic and foreign. He has in his vice-president-elect, the drive, the capacity and the charisma to assist him ably throughout the transition process and thereafter. The whole world is hoping that the Biden-Kamala combination would usher in a new era of reconciliation and recovery in the United States and across the world.
