LAHORE: The WAPDA hockey team was honoured with a cash prize of Rs One million for winning the 66th National Hockey Championship after beating defending champion National Bank of Pakistan in Rawalpindi last week.

Chairman WAPDA Lt. Gen. (retd.) Muzamil Hussain awarded the prize at a special ceremony held at the Wapda House here on Monday.

It may be mentioned here that after winning this title, now Wapda is the holder of all three hockey trophies including women and Junior champions, besides the mens title.

Addressing the prize distribution ceremony, WAPDA Chairman congratulated the team for their brilliant performance in the recently concluded National Championship, as WAPDA managed to win the Men’s Title after nine years. He said that WAPDA, as an organization, has been promoting sports in Pakistan by providing facilities to its players and taking measures for their well being.

He further said that WAPDA has been playing a phenomenal role in the promotion of sports in Pakistan for the last 60 years.

WAPDA is the biggest employer of sportspersons in Pakistan with more than 2200 players and sports officials associated with various units of WSB across the country. WAPDA has 66 teams — 37 mens teams and 29 womens teams — of different games.
