FAISALABAD, Sept 27: The three policemen, who were held here the other day for illegally detaining Sonia Naz’s husband Asim Yousaf and provided him an opportunity to escape, were sent to the Faisalabad district jail on a 14-day judicial remand on Tuesday.
A special police investigation team produced former inspector Jamshed Iqbal Chishti and his two gunmen — constables Iqbal Fareed and Noor Ahmad — before civil judge-cum-judicial magistrate Mubashar Nadeem and pleaded to grant their physical remand for 14 days for interrogation.
A team of lawyers, headed by former district attorney Nazir Sindhu, appeared on behalf of the accused policemen and opposed the prosecution’s request for the grant of physical remand. They claimed that no recovery was involved in the case and the police were bent upon acquiring statements of their choice under the garb of physical remand.
After hearing the arguments of the counsel for the prosecution and the accused, the court turned down the request of the physical remand and sent the accused to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.
The Sargodha Road police had registered a case under section 343 and 125-A of the PPC and section 155 of the Police Order 2002 against suspended SP Abdullah Khalid, the principal character in the Sonia Naz case, and inspector Jamshed Iqbal Chishti after they were declared guilty of wilful breach of duty, keeping Asim Yousaf in illegal confinement and neglect leading to Asim’s escape.
ARRESTED: The local police claimed on Tuesday to have arrested four dacoits here on Tuesday.
District Police Officer Muhammad Amin Wains told the press that the gangsters looted a family of Shahid Hameed at Chak No. 127 of Chak Jhumra and gunned down Muhammad Khan at Chak 293-RB on Monday night in two incidents.
He said a police team within just two hours of the incidents found a clue to the bandits and conducted a raid near the outhouse of Nawaja Sikh. The police succeeded in arresting Rizwan, Mustansar, Azeem and Zahid Rafique along with looted valuables and weapons, he said.
The DPO said the dacoits during preliminary interrogation said their accomplices, Iqbal alias Bali, Abid alias Kali and Naeem were also involved in both the incidents.
Raids were being conducted to round them up, he said.
Meanwhile, Faisalabad DIG Khawaja Khalid Farooq have announced cash awards and commendation certificates for the raiding team.
VEHICLES IMPOUNDED: The Regional Transport Authority officials and traffic police teams impounded 518 vehicles for violations during a 15-day campaign.
As many as 211 smoke-emitting vehicles, 140 using wrong lane, 10 involved in using pressure horn, 91 noise emitting, 10 for mobile phone usage and six vehicles playing tape recorders were seized.
