DURING the recent monsoon, people throughout Pakistan had a bitter experience of drains overflowing and roads and residential areas being inundated for days. The root cause of this mess was that most of the drains were blocked by polythene bags filled with garbage thrown into the drains. To keep the cities and rural areas clean, this practice needs to be stopped immediately.
Many districts in Punjab have imposed a ban on the use of polythene bags, but its implementation has not been enforced vigorously. The flooding of cities after rain can only be prevented if the drains are not clogged with garbage. There is a dire need to impose stringent fines on people who do not properly dispose polythene bags filled with garbage.
