ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Thursday conferred Nishan-i-Imtiaz upon Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi during a ceremony held at Aiwan-i-Sadr.

The military award was conferred upon the naval chief in recognition of his performance and selfless devotion towards maritime defence of the country.

Commissioned in the navy’s Operations Branch in 1985, the officer undertook initial training at Pakistan Naval Academy and in recognition of his performance, he was awarded a gold medal by chairman joint chiefs of staff committee (CJCSC) along with the Sword of Honour.

He is a recipient of Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Sitara-Basalat and the Chevalier medal for saving countless lives during the 2004 tsunamis.

Federal ministers, CJCSC, chief of air staff, senior officers from the armed forces and high ranking officials attended the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) chief Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan, while congratulating the newly-appointed chief of navy staff, expressed hope that the navy would continue progressing under his leadership.

“Both chiefs reiterated to augment the existing synergy between the two services and taking it to further heights. Various matters of mutual cooperation and professional interest were also discussed during the meeting,” a press release issued by PAF said, adding, upon arrival at the Air Headquarters Adm Niazi received guard of honour by a PAF contingent.
