KARACHI: Prime Minis­ter Imran Khan has condemned the murder of a prominent cleric in Karachi on Saturday evening.

Maulana Dr Adil Khan, who headed Jamia Farooqia, was shot dead along with his driver in a suspected targeted attack.

“Condemnable targeted killing of Maulana Adil of Jamia Farooqia in Karachi this evening,” the prime minister said in a tweet, which further read: “My govt has known & I have repeatedly stated this on TV, since last 3 months India’s attempts to target kill Aalims from Sunni & Shia sects to create sectarian conflict across the country.”

Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa also strongly condemned the incident and termed it an attempt to foment unrest by Pakistan’s enemies.

The COAS, according to a statement released by the director general of Inter-Services Public Relations, expressed grief on the assassination of the renowned religious scholar and directed all-out support for the civil administration to bring the criminals to justice.
