Power & circular debt

Published September 28, 2020

THIS is with reference to the news report about the government’s move for removing K-Electric’s top leadership (Sept 8). I would like to remind your readers of a time just a few years ago when KE was KESC and under the control of the government. It was in a miserable state of mismanagement and totally under the control of political mafias.

The government appointed representatives on the board of KE and National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) need to be wary of not throwing the baby out with bath water. They need to identify the real causes of issues faced by KE and get them resolved.

One of them is the huge amount of circular debt owed to the utility by the government itself. If made available those resources could be diverted to the power infrastructure in the city.

Replacing the CEO or operations head will not solve the problem of inadequate investment in infrastructure and enhanced power generation.
