RAWALPINDI: The City Traffic Police on Wednesday launched the ‘One District, One Road’ project along with the Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP), for which an awareness campaign has begun to prevent road accidents.

The joint exercise by the district police, the PHP and traffic law enforcement is being carried out by chief traffic officers, district traffic officers and district PHP officers on 32 selected highways for three months in Punjab starting Sept 1.

In the first phase, an awareness campaign will begin and the district traffic in-charge and PHP district officers will take measures before initiating the enforcement of traffic laws.

These include a survey of selected highways to identify black spots, the erection of speed limit boards, road furniture and road-wise accident data from 2019 for the determination and analysis of accident prone areas, and the preparation of warning slips, awareness handbills and banners to be distributed among road users.

According to the additional inspector general of police PHP, an awareness campaign began on Sept 1 at the start of the joint enforcement project that will continue until Sept 15. As part of the campaign, brochures and leaflets will be distributed among road users, toll plazas, bus stops and other places.

In the second phase, the traffic police will issue tickets and seize documents from violators, and the PHP will provide support in terms of security and assistance to the traffic police during joint checking on selected highways.

A City Traffic Police spokesperson said that the Rawalpindi traffic police in collaboration with Patrolling Highway Police have been conducting an awareness campaign on the Mandra Chakwal Road under the One District One Road project.

He said Deputy Superintendent Police Traffic Rural Junaid Mohsin and Inspector Malik Ghaffar along with patrolling police are providing information to road users about traffic signs, traffic violations and the prevention of accidents.

He said that in the first phase, traffic and driving awareness would be provided to the road users, and after Sept 15, tickets would be issued to violators and FIRs would also be registered for serious violations.

The City Traffic Police in collaboration with the Patrolling Highway Police will install speed cameras on Mandra Chakwal Road on a daily basis to prevent loss of life in daily accidents.
