LAHORE, Jan 18: The mid-term elections of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) from March this year are being held unconstitutionally as the federation must incorporate amendments in its constitution before adopting the new system of elections.

The PFF has recently announced the mid-term elections scheduled to be completed from Tehsil to National level by the mid of the current year to form district-wise base structure of the federation in accordance with the new sports policy.

The present constitution allows the existence of the divisional associations only, but according to the new policy the divisional bodies will be eliminated while the district bodies will exist. Therefore, an amendment in the constitution will have to be sought prior to holding elections.

Furthermore, the constitution has no provision for the Tehsil level bodies and another amendment to include this clause in the constitution will have to be made.

The appointment of the conveners for each province to conduct the elections from Tehsil to the Provincial levels which has been announced by the PFF secretary Agha Liaqat Ali is also unconstitutional as there exists no such provision in the constitution.

Recently the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) made a constitutional amendment to implement the devolution plan announced in the new sports policy.

The PFF should call a general council meeting to make amendments in the constitution, otherwise, the whole practice will be unconstitutional and challenged in a court of law.
