Kakistocracy

Published July 6, 2020

I HAVE recently come across a new word — kakistocracy — which means government by least suitable citizens. It can be said that it is an accurate elaboration of our government.

Since the very day the PTI assumed power it has been in limelight owing to the irrelevant statements and slanderous speeches made by cabinet ministers that have caused more fissures between the opposition and the government.

Recently, Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhary spilled the beans about the party’s internal affairs on which the prime minister has shown displeasure. On the other hand, Climate Change Minister Zartaj Gul Wazir reportedly said that Covid-19 means coronavirus has 19 points for every country based on its respective immunity levels.

Then lately Prime Minister Khan called Osama bin Laden a martyr in the National Assembly, which provoked another wave of criticism at an international level.

The prime minister has set a new tradition giving preference to nonelected professionals over elected parliamentarians. The number of special assistants had been between three and 13 in the past but, Mr Khan has appointed 15 special assistants which is highest in the history of Pakistan. This is also against parliamentary ethos.

The economy is in a shambles, the government has failed to protect people from coronavirus and statistics show the government is failing to control inflation.

The PTI should set its house in order to focus on economy and coronavirus before it gets too late.
