SIMLA: The Congress Working Committee when it meets tomorrow [July 3] will be called upon to tackle one of the toughest problems it has ever tackled, writes the political correspondent of the Associated Press of India. …
It is more difficult and complicated than the office acceptance issue which faced the committee eight years ago in 1937. The Committee was then called upon to decide whether the Congress should accept office in the Provinces or not.
Today the Congress is called upon to share responsibility for the Central Government with the Muslim League and other important elements in the country. Under the Wavell Plan the Congress, though it claims to be a majority Party in the country, will get only approximately one-third representation in the new Executive Council, as the remaining two-thirds will be divided between the Muslim League and other important elements in the country.
The Committee has to tackle immediately when it meets tomorrow the question of selection of Congress personnel for the New Executive Council. The panel of names has to be submitted to the Viceroy latest by July 6. Therefore the Committee has only three days to decide this most delicate and thorny problem…
