PESHAWAR, Jan 18: Jamaat-i-Islami staged a sit-in here on Friday to protest against the detention of the leaders of various parties, particularly their Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
Despite tight security in the city, the JI workers assembled at Chowk Yadgar after the Friday prayers. Waving the party flag, they chanted slogans against the government and the United States, and condemned the government policies.
Speaking at the demonstration, the provincial deputy chief of Jamaat, Hakeem Abdul Waheed, and other leaders warned that people would not allow any body to convert Pakistan into a secular state. They said that under the garb of anti-terrorism war Muslims were being victimized throughout the world.
They said that if the detained leaders were not released and their demands were not met, the JI would launch a countrywide movement against the government.
Meanwhile, the local administration has beefed security measures and deployed the police outside mosques to avert any eventuality.
NOWSHERA: Police arrested four workers of Jamaat-i- Islami as they staged a sit-in in front of the district courts against the detention of JI Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad here on Friday.
A big contingent of police headed by the Nowshera SP raided the sit-in camp and held four workers, including the JI district Amir, under Sec 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) and uprooted the camp.
JI provincial Amir Prof Ibrahim and Peshawar district Amir Merajuddin Khan have criticized the government for disrupting the peaceful demonstration and arresting of workers. Nowshera district Bar president Kifayat Ali advocate also criticized the district police attitude towards peaceful demonstrators.
Addressing the demonstrators, the speakers said that the government was following the dictates of America.
LAKKI MARWAT: Jamaat-i-Islami held a sit-in here on Friday and dema-nded an immediate release of the leaders of the various outfits.
Led by the district JI Amir Prof Sher Ghulam and general secretary Rafiullah Khan, scores of the Jamaat and Hizbul Mujahideen workers protested in front of the district Nazim offices from 10am to 12 noon.
