ISLAMABAD: As the number of Covid-19 cases increase, prices of masks, gloves and sanitisers have gone up again.

Most markets in Islamabad were facing shortage of these items.

Officials of the capital administration said the city saw a shortage of masks, gloves and sanitisers back in April when the virus started spreading. However, supply of these items was ensured at that time to meet the demand, they added.

The demand for masks, gloves and sanitisers has increased after easing of the lockdown, the officials said.

In April, a mask was available for Rs20 whereas it costs between Rs25 to Rs30 today, they said. Similarly, a box of surgical gloves was available for Rs900 in April, whereas its price has increased upto Rs1,500.

Similarly, price of a box of alcoholic swab has gone up by 30 to 60pc, the officials added.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Hamza Shafqaat said the capital administration was ensuring availability of face masks, gloves and sanitisers in markets and shops.

Retailers and shopkeepers are allowed to earn 5 to 6pc profit on these items, the DC said.

Shortage of items will increase their demand, he stated, adding that due to the shortage, manufacturers and factories will also sell items at higher rates.

The officials of the capital administration are ensuring that profiteering and hoarding of these items does not take place, the DC said, adding that receipts issued by factories or wholesalers to retailers and shopkeepers are being checked regularly.

Before the spread of the virus, masks were available for Rs7 to Rs8 as there was not much demand for them.

The DC advised that there was no need to wear the Rs17-18 surgical masks. People may use homemade masks too made with three layers of cloths and use them repeatedly after washing, he added.

The N95 masks are only for doctors, he said, adding that action will be taken against those who are earning more than 5 to 6pc profits from sale of masks.
