(EDITORIAL) It is no idle warning from Sir Stafford Cripps that “a clash of interests between Britain and Russia might lead to a century of antagonism and struggle”. The Labour leader points to the moral to adorn the tale that the Labour party could handle Anglo-Soviet relations better than any other party in Britain. Points at issue between the two have been multiplying of late. If over the question of Poland, agreement seemed to have been reached at the Crimea Conference, the interpretation of the terms offered now by Stalin has not been to the British taste.

Another cockpit of trouble in Europe is Trieste, where Marshal Tito insists on Yugo-Slav rights which the Anglo-American leaders are loath to concede. That Marshal Tito has the tacit backing of Soviet Russia is no secret. The tripartite division of Germany into zones of occupation by the Big Three has, again, not been perfect.
