DACCA: At least 10 people were killed and over 100 injured in clashes between Police and workers of a metal factory at Postgola near here this afternoon [May 22], according to official sources.

Among those killed was the Additional Superintendent of Police, Dacca City, whose body with several knife injuries was recovered from a ditch. The Subdivisional Officer, Saddar South, was seriously injured in the clashes.

The incident took place when workers of a metal factory which was under lock-out resisted some people of the management in taking out finished products from the factory, official sources said. The Police opened fire on a violent crowd after having failed to disperse the mob by the use of tear-gas shells and lathi-charge. Earlier, the crowd stoned the Police. Thirty-four Police personnel and 49 others were wounded and admitted into hospitals. Some others also received minor injuries and were released after first aid.

One hundred and fifty-seven persons have so far been put under arrest. The situation is under control, sources said. A Press Note issued last night by the East Pakistan Government said … [it] has ordered an immediate high-level inquiry into the matter.
