There was no edition of the newspaper on May 20, 1970, on account of Eid Miladun Nabi. The following excerpt is from the previous day’s edition.
DACCA: At least ten persons were injured and several hundred houses were uprooted by a severe cyclonic storm which swept over Rajshahi town last evening [May 17], according to reports reaching here.
When contacted the Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi told [agency] today that about 50 to 60 houses were razed to the ground at Kazihata and Lakhnipur in Rajshahi, when the nor’wester, with a speed of about 80 p.m., lashed the town last evening. The severe cyclonic storm, which lasted over an hour, also dislocated traffic. Telephone and telegraph polls were uprooted. — Agency
[Meanwhile, as reported by our correspondent in Quetta,] Five Pakhtoon students of local colleges were today [May 18] sentenced by the Summary Military Court to undergo imprisonment ranging from three months to one year. … The students had courted arrest in protest against the refusal of the District Magistrate, Quetta-Pishin, to grant them permission to bring out a procession to voice the demand for a separate Pakhtoonistan province for the Pashto speaking people of Baluchistan.
