ISLAMABAD, Sept 7: There is a need for dialogue and interfaith harmony between the people belonging to different religions to avert the clash of civilization, said David Drew, head of a delegation of British members of Parliament. Talking to All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) Chairman Shahbaz Bhatti here on Wednesday, Mr Drew expressed concern over the misuse of blasphemy law.

“Discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, colour, creed and gender is unacceptable in enlightened progressive democratic societies. We will strengthen the bridge-building efforts between Pakistan and the West,” he said.

He said: “The United Kingdom values democratic norms, supremacy of parliament, gender equality, religious freedom and protection of human rights as pillars for the establishment of an enlightened, moderate and progressive society. Empowerment and uplift of marginalized and oppressed sections of society can only strengthen democratic norms and human rights values in Pakistan.”

Mr Drew said the UK appreciated the efforts of Pakistan against terrorism and considered it an important ally. “Terrorism should not be linked with any religion; it is a social evil and a crime against humanity,” he said.

He said political parties and human rights organizations could play a vital role for the stability of democracy, economic prosperity and inter communal unity in Pakistan, and the UK would continue to extend its cooperation to strengthen democratic process in the country.
