DACCA: Police was called to quell a clash between the electioneering workers of rival student organisations inside Dacca University campus in which four students received minor injuries. According to Dacca Medical College Hosp­ital, the students were released after first aid [May 14].

The incident took place over the question of participation in the ensuing election to the Dacca University Central Students Unions and the different hall unions. … According to the Dacca University authorities, a group of students demanding boycott of the elections attacked the general students. The police on receipt of the information entered the campus and soon the miscreants took to their heels ...

Afterwards a batch of students met the Vice-Chancellor and expressed the view that the entry of Police was not necessary. The Vice-Chancellor explained the situation under which the Police had to enter the premises and said that the life and safety of students was the first concern of university authorities and that no chance or risk could be taken in this matter. He said that the question of entry of the Police will not arise so long as law and order can be maintained by the students and university authorities themselves.
