SUKKUR: More than 100 tonnes of wheat was seized in two raids conducted on convoys of trucks and container-mounted trailers passing through Sukkur and Dadu areas, respectively, on Sunday to foil smuggling of the commodity to Punjab.
In Dadu, police intercepted a convoy of eight container-mounted trailers to seize a consignment of wheat being smuggled to Balochistan.
Sukkur district food controller Vishin Das, got a convoy of 22 Punjab-bound trucks intercepted by the local police. In the ensuing action, around 6,000 bags each containing 100kg wheat, were impounded along with the vehicles. The seized consignments were stored in government godowns in Rohri and Salehpat.
They said the containers were carrying at total of 5,350 bags containing 100kg wheat each.
The police team led by B-Section SHO Amanullah Channa said drivers of the vehicles were arrested and the seized consignments were handed over to local officials of food department.
In a similar raid, Kahirpur Nathan Shah police seized 3,000 bags of wheat from a Balochistan-bound convoy of trucks.
Area SHO Akbar Channa said the seized stocks were handed over to the local food officials.
