Coronavirus is here

REPORTS about coronavirus in Iran have set the alarm bells ringing not only for Iran but also for Pakistan, where two cases have been officially confirmed. There are reports about at least eight deaths from coronavirus in Iran, while over 40 have been diagnosed with the virus. The figures, as experts say, could rise.

The virus can become a serious threat not only for Iran, but also for Pakistan and other neighbouring countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. The region remains extremely vulnerable to epidemics.

Take the example of polio. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the two countries out of the three in the world which are yet to overcome polio virus. Now we face a threat of coronavirus which will give tough time to these countries if precautionary and preemptive measures are not taken.

It is positive sign that the Balochistan government has shown concern over the issue as the chief minister has called the prime minister, seeking his help in countering the threat and stopping the virus from entering Pakistan.

Furthermore, threat alerts have already been issued to the authorities of five districts — Chaghi, Wasuk, Panjgur, Kech and Gwadar — having borders with Iran. Besides, the Balochistan government spokesman has confirmed a ban on the movement of people including pilgrims from Iran into Pakistan and vice versa.

Pakistan has a long and porous border with Iran. The government is making efforts and screening people on checkposts, but there are several points which are not monitored by the state.

Illegal Iranian fuel is smuggled from these unmonitored points, and news of the kidnapping of border guards has already highlighted the vulnerability of the porous border.

Moreover, thousands of tonnes of edible items reach Makran and other parts of Balochistan from Iran. There is fear that virus might reach here from Iran through these items.

The authorities concerned should handle this issue on a war-footing.

THE whole world is aware how Pakistan’s best friend and neighbour, China is under tremendous pressure and lockdown because of the coronavirus epidemic.

To date, the number of people who have died in China and other countries is more than 2,700, while more than 81,000 people have been diagnosed as afflicted by the virus.

It is unfortunate that despite these alarming statistics about an infection that is menacing people all over the world, in Pakistan some insensitive people are using different apps like TikTok to poke fun at the people infected by the virus and also at the Chinese people. This is boorish behaviour which is unacceptable and deserves to be condemned in the most stringent manner possible.

This matter should not be the subject of satire because thousands of people have died in China and even the Iranian government has reported 16 deaths with more than 400 confirmed cases in the country. Both countries are good neighbours of Pakistan.

I would request that all Pakistanis should pray for the health of all patients affected by coronavirus and for those who have passed away because of this disease.
