Kashmiris plan NY rally

Published August 23, 2005

NEW YORK, Aug 22: The leader of a group of eight Kashmiri political parties Monday announced plans to stage a protest rally in front of the United Nations headquarters on Sept 15 when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addresses the UN General Assembly’s summit meeting.

Sardar Mohammad Arshad Khan, president of the Kashmiri-American Association, said the purpose behind holding the demonstration was to focus attention on the Kashmir dispute which remains unresolved even after the passage of 58 years.

Mr Khan said the association was formed last week to forge a joint front against any division of the state of Kashmir and to promote the cause of the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

He said the demonstrators would call on the United Nations to implement its resolutions on the Kashmir issue and, as an immediate measure, put an end to the atrocities in Indian-held Kashmir.—Correspondent
